It was great to be part of this #ECSJ2026 panel, especially getting to share research by my MA students Wouter Van Houting & Lucas Verhoeven—not just my own.

Students do such important theses, but they never reach the journalists whose work they study.

EUROPEAN SCIENCE JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2026 Third place Sigrid März Martin Rücker By combining "robust" scientific evidence with patient stories and documentary research, the judges felt März and Rücker help readers navigate through "an era of disinformation, simple promises and snake oil merchants." EFSJ EUROPEAN SCIENCE JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2026 Second place Linda Samplonius Jop de Vrieze The judges commended this "rare" portfolio for tackling a complex and controversial area of science with "accuracy, balance, and clarity." The work's "clear societal relevance" was lauded, as well as its ability to incorporate multiple strands into a "compelling" narrative. EFSJ EUROPEAN SCIENCE JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2026 First place EFSJ Arnaud Robert The judges felt this work "transcends" investigative science journalism, lifting the curtain of cutting-edge science to reveal a world "vulnerable to an economy of attention" that can relegate the very people It aims to serve to "props." This "outstanding" portfolio draws from personal experience to go "far beyond what science journalism usually can realize."
