Vanilla is the second most expensive spice on the planet, surpassed only by saffron. For three hundred years, growers outside Mexico watched their orchids bloom and produce nothing. The problem was solved in 1841 by an enslaved twelve-year-old boy named Edmond Albius, using a sliver of bamboo and his thumb.
