#EDOPS is the environmental half of my Computing Place initiative; a cultural-dimensions companion (#CDOP) is 2 early stage. Showing pilot work on African subregions (Lovejoy, et al) at Spatial Humanities in Braga, 23-25 Sep.

Three ways in to #EDOPS, + an API + good docs

• Sandbox: look up place or polity, choose spatial scope, explore signatures several ways
• Workbench: Pilot environment/culture correspondence studies
• Data Explorer: global & regional maps of underlying variables

🧵 The Environmental Dimensions of Place Service (EDOPS) v0.4 is live: edops.computingplace.org

Give it a place (settlement, historical polity) & get a structured "environmental signature" of the drainage basin(s) it occupies: hydrology, climate, terrain, etc. + climate & land use over time

Some teaser screenshots for v0.4 update to Environmental Dimensions of Place Service (EDOPS) platform, releasing in a couple of weeks. Delivers parameterized environmental data profiles ('signatures') for any terrestrial location, w/tools to explore in sandbox and workbench pages. Writing docs now.

#fossilfriday a contrast in Permian amphibians. The left jaw and tooth fragment belongs to Eryops, one of the most common Permian critters. The right belongs to the much bigger Edops craigi. On display at Texas Through Time, Hillsboro.

Just pushed a v0.3 of Environmental Dimensions of Place Service (EDOPS) edops.computingplace.org, delivering env signatures for places. There's a sandbox, API, repo with lots of docs (github.com/kgeographer/...), and an arm-wavy blog post (kgeographer.org/category/res...). Early stages, progressing.

First day trip on this 2 month Santa Fe stay: Rio Grande near Pilar and Taos Pueblo. A day off from #EDOPS environmental sig work, fieldwork you might say. Three hours later the skies exploded in massive thunder/hail storm. For an hour.

Returned to Santa Fe, settling in for 10 weeks to work on my Environmental Dimensions of Place service (#EDOPS) and do some wandering in clear light.

Development of the EDOPS environmental signature is focused mostly on detailed hydro and climate variables, but #ecoregions will be linked also. A *very* preliminary interface for viewing them w/wiki text is in place. cedop.kgeographer.org/edop
Also, ishi.pitt.edu is now a project partner! #wiring

I have a work in progress, EDOPS, Environmental Dimensions of Place that I think will serve this request, and much more, globally. Explainer: kgeographer.org/computing-pl.... Very early prototype sandbox: cedop.kgeographer.org/edop

I like this, and plan to get Claude Code to generate some 'narrative notebooks' exposing decisions taken in developing my EDOPS environmental signature service. kgeographer.org/computing-pl...

All to the good! But the longest-standing reason not to is because legitimate opinions are used to mainstream the fascist lunatics on the opposite page that the Editorial staff solicit/ghost-edit edops for. Just don’t write for the centrist-socialite fascists who own the Times.

Happy #FossilFriday! The big guy here is Edops craigi, a temnospondyl from the Permian on display at Harvard MNH.

I can only assume he chomp 🧪
