How can we make professional learning more focused and practical so it actually helps improve student outcomes and supports our school improvement goals?

Obviously an increase in pay but as a teacher I would honestly take smaller class sizes and more planning time too!

I'm currently a mentor for an upcoming principal. I found it very helpful to ask her areas that she wanted to grow in. A model should incorporate a process for identifying and comprehending the individual needs of upcoming principals. #edsi6321

I think focusing on student growth rather than traditional standardized tests, where all students are expected to reach the same outcomes, is a great place to start! #EDSI6321

Hey, I'm a history teacher for 8th-12th grade. Working on my Ed.D for School Improvement. I'm wondering what was the most impactful pd you have experienced? What made it so?

Hi Andrew! One great, super simple strategy is "2 x 10" and sticky note messages. 2 x 10 stands for having a 2-minute, noncontingent conversation with a student for ten consecutive days. It helps create strong relationships that are not based on behavior or academic performance. #edsi6321

It can be so difficult to hold on to the teacher perspective being out of the classroom. Treating teachers as the experts they are in every regard is important. Include them in decision making, curriculum development, and assessment. #edsi6321

Nothing frustrates me more as an administrator when a few teachers go rogue on not holding students to agreed-upon standards! Some examples would include cell phones, tardies, and allowing students to leave class without a hall pass. #edsi6321

I think that the idea of flipping the power & responsibilty quote is interesting. It is actually fitting, because in order to obtain power, you have to be willing to take on responsibility. The two really go hand in hand. #TLAP #edsi6321

A game-changer for retention is giving teachers a REAL voice in decision-making—especially when it comes to curriculum, strategies, & PD. When teachers feel heard & trusted instead of just being told what to do, morale improves, resistance decreases, and they’re more likely to stay. #edsi6321

Giving teachers a voice in decision-making can make a huge difference. Celebrating teachers and their successes, big or small, can make a difference too! When teachers feel heard, seen, and supported, they are more likely to be engaged and committed to the profession. #edsi6321

I would say to build a relationship based on the students interest and try to have that interest build a base of education. Assignments can meet the standards and still apply to the interest of the student, and celebrate achievements when possible #edusky #edsi6321

Yes I agree giving teachers a voice in what they are learning would increase their participation for sure! #EDSI6321

One of the biggest changes I have made since moving into administration is networking when I attend trainings and conferences. I used to go, take my notes, and leave with the info gleaned there. Now, I have learned the power of collaborating with other leaders. #edsi6321

I have learned that my students often do work better and learn more when I let go a little and give them more freedom to accomplish things on their own terms. Often they find that they are more curious about something than they thought! #TLAP #edsi6321
