The reason memory bandwidths have gotten so absurd and why memory transfers take upwards of 30-40% of a chips power budget these days, date back to a design proposal by von neumann for the edvac. An architecture for computer that we still use.

Some parts of the EDVAC were very modern, like using binary digits instead of decimal, a single gate type for the logic, and most importantly storing programs along with data. But they hadn’t figured out reliable memory at all yet, so it was very limited.
