To explain: de Gaulle realised the UK had no deep commitment to the EEC and USA had no deep commitment to NATO, and that France/EEC should therefore make their way in the world without relying on either.

One thing I am exploring in what I am writing is how the UK treated EEC/EU as an international organisation while all along it was a supranational entity.

And the supranationalism was there from even before the EEC, in the ECSC.

Mamdani ties 5th century resistance of St. Patrick against Romans to Irish fight against British colonialism to Irish discrimination in US to Irish building US labor unions to Ireland being first EEC country to support a Palestinian State.

Just a master class in political education.
Happy St. Patrick's Day, New York.

FACT OF THE DAY. 1 January 1973. UK officially became a member of the European Economic Community (EEC). The Daily Mail was very enthusiastic about Britain’s entry at the time.

Lee Anderson has come out as an ardent Dad's Army fan.

Spent yesterday posing with a statue of Arthur Lowe, aka Captain Mainwaring himself.

Fun fact. Lowe was very pro EEC. Championed the "Yes" campaign during 1975 referendum. Appeared on posters encouraging voters to stay in Europe.

The European story continues. De Gaulle says non, Britain says yes and the EEC booms
New episode out – @dorianlynskey.bsky.social and @iandunt.bsky.social continue the story of European union. Join them for a heady mix of economic expansion and political stagnation. Take a trip back in time to when Britain said "Yes!" to Europe.

Happy 40th anniversary of EEC accession to Spain and Portugal. A resounding success story not just for Iberia but for Europe as a whole 🇪🇸🇵🇹🇪🇺

Might also have had something to do with joining the EEC or nah?
If you pile your furniture in the middle of your living room then set it on fire, you will have the warmest house in your street, for a few hours.

Some of the responses to Andy Burnham’s “good growth in every postcode” are very funny, like if people had responded to John Major on EEC membership by going “John, nobody is borne by clouds!!!”

Perhaps they're remembering the 1975 EEC Referendum where the UK decided to remain in the European Economic Community with a 67% majority.

Most of what this pundit says is outside my area, but Brexit being “biggest constitutional shake up…since Reformation” is twaddle.

We joined EEC by Act of Parliament and left EU the same way.

Minor compared to:
Beheading of king
Civil wars
Acts of Union
Ejecting another king
1832 Reform Act

Indeed, the guy who vetoed Britain's EEC membership application and shouted "vive le Quebec libre" was not, in fact, a big fan of the Anglosphere

The EEC was literally overthrowing entire continents and installing puppet govts and ruling nations by proxy(and often not even by proxy) to compare them to a mexican cartel is like saying a sucker shark has the biggest teeth in the ocean

40 years ago today Spain and Portugal joined the EEC

Fifty years of freedom and forty years which mark Spain’s longest democratic period — recovered after the 1936 military uprising, civil war, and 40 years of dictatorship
🕊️🇪🇺 Forty years on, Spain’s accession to the EEC stands as a landmark in both national and European memory. It anchored the country's young democracy and provided the economic and institutional framework for its transformation in the decades that followed @50enlibertad.bsky.social
