Now I want to know which CNN reporter or producer doesn't know the word "sycophant."

i have learned that the word "eggcorn" is not just itself an eggcorn, but because the word "acorn" started as an eggcorn of "oak corn", "eggcorn" is a DOUBLE eggcorn

many thanks to @lingthusiasm.bsky.social for sharing this delightful fact in a bonus episode 🐦🐦

safe bet we’ll hear the apparatchiks repeat this phrase, an obvious eggcorn, many times tomorrow like they’ve been saying it all their lives.

Someone once wrote down eggcorn instead of acorn and so now we use the word eggcorn to describe a plausible alternative word that someone uses instead of the proper word and that’s my fact for you to keep today

Fun fact: these are called eggcorns! There's a great list here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggcorn.

Recently learned this is called an eggcorn, a malapropism that more or less preserves the meaning
Not to be THAT dictionary, but…

It’s ‘per se,’ not ‘per say.’
It’s ‘dog-eat-dog world,’ not ‘doggy-dog world.’
It’s ‘hunger pangs,’ not ‘hunger pains.’
It’s ‘one and the same,’ not ‘one in the same.’
It's 'buck naked,' not 'butt naked.'

Today I learnt 'eggcorn' for something I see all the time!
"An eggcorn is the alteration of a word or phrase through the mishearing or reinterpretation of one or more of its elements, creating a plausible new phrase when used in the same context. An eggcorn is an unexpectedly fitting malapropism"

I just saw someone use the phrase “lame street media”, and thought “ooh, do they think the term is Main Street media?”, and a search on Bluesky shows that there are people out there who think it is Main Street media.

I love a good eggcorn.
