This unique basalt rock formation is believed to have formed during one of the many eruptions of Mt. Eldfell in the last 15.000 years.

Eldfell, on Heimaey, formed in a single six-month-long eruption in 1973. Everyone evacuated, and nobody was killed, but many homes were lost to lava and ash.
You can see it from anywhere in town, and can see the whole town from the crater rim.
A low, sloping, asymmetrical volcanic cone, mostly covered in snow, but with some black and red rock sticking out. Pieces of the cone broke off during the 1973 eruption, and the resulting gap is visible on the left side of the image. The low, broad, snow-covered volcanic cone of Eldfell, looming over some white and gray houses at the edge of the town of Vestmannaeyjabær. The town used to extend further into what would be the background of this image; there are still houses buried under lava and ash. A view over Vestamannaeyjabær (and most of the island of Heimaey, really), from the top of Eldfell volcano. In the foreground, the crater rim is made of chunks of red rock. The crater itself, behind that, is covered in snow. Beyond that is the whole town, spread out across the flat parts of the island. This volcano was not here when the town was founded. The town ends at some brown-black craggy hills (remnants of much older volcanoes), and beyond that is blue ocean and blue sky.

I'm on Heimaey today.
The place where I'm staying was built in 1911, and therefore survived the 1973 eruption.
Being able to see the fissure from the bathroom window somehow drives the immediacy of that situation home even more than just seeing how close Eldfell is to the town.

Eldfell („Fire Mountain“) is a volcano on Heimaey, the largest of the Westman Islands. The eruption started in January 1973, lasting for 6 months. It significantly altered the landscape, burying approximately 400 houses under lava and ash.

Katla is enormous.
This volcano, located under the even-more-enormous Myrdalsjökull (glacier), has historically been one of Iceland's most active. But - its last eruption was in 1918, and 100+ years of quiet is uncharacteristic. When it goes again, it will be devastating for the central south coast.
Katla and Myrdalsjökull (south Iceland), as viewed from Eldfell on Heimaey. Just an absolutely massive mound of glacial ice and snow framed against a clear sky. It clearly extends up quite high from the sea, and slopes very gently down to the sides. In the immediate foreground is some 52-year-old rock from the eruption of Eldfell; between that and Katla is one of the smaller Westman Islands.

We stayed 3 nights in Heimaey, the main island. The eruption of Eldfell volcano lasted from Jan to July 1973. I highly recommend a visit to the Eldheimar museum to learn about the eruption. Glad we took the time to experience the island!

Helgafell, also on Heimaey, also formed in a single eruption, this one about 5000 years ago. It is responsible for creating most of the land that Vestmannaeyjabær now occupies.
