**The top map is what is often shown to represent the number of Republicans and Democrats.** **The bottom map reflects populated areas.** The difference is geography. The United States is a very large country. Most of its land mass is rural, sparsely populated, and votes Republican. Those counties are colored solid red on a standard electoral map regardless of whether 500 people live there or 5 million. When you size each dot by the number of actual human beings who cast a vote — the map looks completely different. The red landslide disappears. The country looks divided. Closely. Almost evenly. Here is what the geography actually tells us: 📍 Wyoming has 3 electoral votes and approximately 576,000 residents. 📍 California has 54 electoral votes and approximately 39 million residents. 📍 On the top map, Wyoming's wide open red space looks equivalent to California's dense blue coastline. 📍 It is not. This matters for three reasons: 🔴 It explains why candidates who lose the popular vote can win the presidency — land doesn't vote, people do, but the Electoral College weights some people's votes more heavily than others based on where they live. 🔴 It is why the argument that America is "overwhelmingly red" is a geography argument, not a people argument. More Americans live in blue and purple areas than the map suggests. 🔴 It is why down-ballot races — Senate, House, Governor, State Legislature — are far more competitive than the sea of red implies. The people are there. They just live in smaller spaces. The Electoral College only applies to the presidency. Every other race is a direct vote. The person with the most votes wins. Look at the bottom map. That is your country. All of it. Even the parts the top map colors red because nobody lives there. Vote like you live in the bottom map. Because you do. 🗳️ Register to vote at vote.gov. 🗳️ Remember in November. Every level. Every seat.
