Data centers contribute to higher power bills by driving up electricity demand, requiring expensive grid upgrades, and raising wholesale market prices.

🇫🇷⚡ France’s power market just hit a new extreme: record-breaking negative electricity prices.

In April, 90% of days saw zero or below-zero prices on the day-ahead market.

At one point, prices plunged to -€479/MWh amid midday solar oversupply 📉

- No Price Spikes: Gas and electricity prices are stable, reflecting normal market trends.
- Renewable Growth: Renewable energy capacity is growing, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

In short: Leave our public lands alone!

#Spain combination of high solar irradiance, large available land, and aggressive #renewable auction programs has made it one of Europe's fastest-growing solar markets. #Solar regularly sets the marginal price in Spain's electricity market — meaning that when the sun shines, prices fall toward zero.

As this graphic makes clear, gas - which is a very expensive form of generation - sets the market price of electricity in the UK way more than it does in other countries.

Want lower electricity bills?

Get behind renewables, not drilling for more North Sea gas.

...& repeal of the Thatcher ban on public ownership of water companies (not quite the instant nationalisation some wanted but audience still v excited), Speeding up the breaking of the link between electricity prices & gas market sounds boring meanwhile but it's the route to cheaper electricity.

19% of the US's petroleum comes from imports.

80% of which is crude, ~62% of which is imported from Canada.

In 2023, Canada exported 27.6 terawatt-hours of electricity to the US. That is enough to power ~2,200,000-2,600,000 homes, for a year.

The US needs our energy and resources.

Over half the electricity produced in both the National Electricity Market and WA's Wholesale Electricity Market came from renewable electricity in the past month.

This is putting downwards pressure on wholesale prices.

We're in the “egg shortage” phase of the electricity market. AI is hungry for power, so prices rise. But higher prices invite new investment—and more generation. Give it time, and the market will hatch more watts.
