Rioting is, of course, a form of protest. But the rhetorical trick of “protests work” is not to pull people into understanding the function of rioting and its power, but instead to elevate marching and chanting as equal to the power of quantifiably destructive, aggressively disruptive mobilization.

I genuinely don't think SNL can do a cold open of that. I mean, what could you even "elevate" to turn it into parody? What comic exaggeration would be half as embarrassing and ridiculous as the real thing?

Talarico represents something increasingly rare in U.S. politics: moral clarity without cruelty, conviction without contempt, & faith without hypocrisy.Texas has an extraordinary opportunity to elevate a different kind of leadership, one our entire country desperately needs.
Q: You said Ken is one of the most corrupt politicians in America. Do you love him?
James Talarico: Yes. Ken Paxton is a child of God and my brother in Christ.
But love requires accountability.

I've been reading a lot of old Amiga mags recently and had this thought that, if the edginess was universal, UK-based writers in particular were taking it upon themselves to "elevate" the scornful and wilfully dishonest takedown review to a status of cultural tradition.

Let us pause and reflect on the fact that the MI senate primary was *fantastically expensive* and the sole effect was to elevate a hack with no principles.
