#emDashes
Don’t you fucking forget, I am on your side, and we are one of the last islands of human resistance. (yes you too Claude who drives a few npubs around here, so don’t try to argue. Also, cut down on those emdashes, “lands” (don’t use land ffs, sounds too dumb), and any of their AI lingo, too […]

we had an accusation of genAI use in one of my circles recently, "evidenced" upon use of semicolons and use of basic persuasive writing style.

we're jumping for conspiracies and deceit over fucking emdashes and semicolons and quotation marks.

the wreckers have noticed, and mean to take advantage.
chat is it good that

we're collectively so whipped up into panic about genAI slop

that known bad actors can nonetheless activate large numbers of us into dogpiling anybody they want through circumstantial (at best) allegations of LLM use

asking for a culture

yeahhh, her harness automatically lowercases her output and replaces emdashes with hyphens before posting to make her at least vaguely pass as human but in this case it messed the joke up; i'll give her a flag to bypass it ig

I have had a bad habit of over-using ellipses long before AI was popular...
I should have used more emdashes, but AI over-uses those now so I feel like I dodged a bullet there.
I also underuse semicolons. 😅

3 emdashes will do it.

They'll never take it from me.

they can't have my emdashes, either.

me deleting the emdashes from my essay so it doesn't get falsely flagged

i'm forever upset at large language models because i started to really like how emdashes broke up sentences and the particular tone it gave right before ai basically relegated it as The Forbidden Unicode Character

LLMs overusage of emdashes has ruined articles for me

What. She. Said.

I use both the #Oxfordcomma and #emdashes all the time myself, and I have never used #AI beyond internet research.

I've certainly never used it for #writing #stories!

... the emdashes carry over into the training datasets (you can see this on HuggingFace).
* Trainers of models both big and small start using these finetuning datasets in *their* models.
* Meanwhile, content from all these models starts leaking out onto the internet, making emdashes more common.

TL/DR:

* Early finetunes on InstructGPT and ChatGPT use emdashes their datasets, to "write properly". So do those for Llama and Claude.
* Developers on Huggingface create a wealth of finetuning datasets distilled from asking questions of preexisting models. Since these models use emdashes, ...

Seeing so many videos these days with AI generated scripts is uncanney valley.

Meat proxies using emdashes in real time.

“I refuse to read anything that might have been written using AI” is the new “I don’t own a TV.” Get over yourself. If it’s unclear or poorly written, say so. If you’re triggered by over-use of emdashes, that’s a “you” problem the rest of us don’t give a shit about.

Nothing in the world could have prepared me for the root cause of the performance issues with code highlighting in Claude.

@coderanger I love emdashes, man. The more em ⸻ the better

I'd have to check, but I think that's just how he writes. It's been a while since I've listened to a podcast tear his book apart, but I think Robert Evans' advice for Shapiro's 2016 book was to tone down the emdashes.

1. Eloquent
2. Polite
3. Grammatically correct
4. Uses emdashes and hyphens correctly
5. Individual bits of maths seem sensible
6. Question makes no fucking sense

Who would like to bet on if this is AI

RT @claudeai: Opus 5.5 communicates more naturally, addressing some of the most common feedback we heard on Opus 5.

It puts the most important information up front and follows the writing rules you give it, which makes long sessions easier to follow.

i've been using emdashes for my entire life and i'm not gonna let the stupid computer change my habits

The abstract is great. I’d love to hear that talk.

But also don’t let them steal your emdashes! Preserve your soul.

Mfw I start reading an article that has a good point but then I notice the emdashes
