Hey look at that. Tomorrow is today and today has brought the long awaited release of EmberData/WarpDrive 5.4, LTS 5.3 and the start of 5.5. Going forward we’ll be releasing minors on the 6 week cadence again.

Over the next week we’ll write a proper blog post unpacking this release.

The Ember community has been hearing about WarpDrive as "the new data management layer that will replace EmberData—for the better". In the blog posts "From Ember Data to WarpDrive", Marine presents an overview of what migrating to WarpDrive means for Ember devs.

For many years I've assumed my ~10yr tenure of steering EmberData/WarpDrive would come to a natural close when the current evolutionary arc it is on concluded.

But new paradigms often lead to new insights and innovations, and the past year has been full of them. The future is intriguing.

Taking a detour from shipping new things in @warp-drive.io to shoring up things for users still on 4.x of #emberData

We reactivated a branch for v4 and intend on releasing new minors to ensure those users can adopt vite / and enable refining the migration path to v5.

@warp-drive.io (formerly #emberdata) version 5.5-alpha.21 is compatible with any framework that works with a signals concept. Even multiple on one page sharing data. Pluggable reactivity ftw. Official #svelte/#vue/#preact/#lit integrations coming soon. ✨🌌

Will be doing a short workshop at emberfest covering migration from 4.x to 5.x of EmberData/ @warp-drive.io

It’ll include ModelFragments. We’ve made great progress and expect to have the path ready in the next few weeks, and we think we might be able to develop a codemod for much of it.

in EmberData/WarpDrive we make a lot of things immutable in dev and mutable in prod to balance perf and resiliency with helping devs achieve correctness. Immutability doesn't have to have a high cost, but it definitely can.

Added a comparison of traditional EmberData models vs new SchemaRecord paradigm to request service cheatsheet.

Handy for teams migrating to the new request service paradigm.
No fluff, just practical mappings:

This is basically one of several reasons why we did it that way for WarpDrive/EmberData (there are a lot of other benefits too like being able to use discriminating unions / partials etc)

The configuration story for @warp-drive.io is about to get a lot simpler.

When we were iterating on EmberData we broke it apart into packages with well defined boundaries. Then we added new packages that replaced some of the old packages with better implementations. Ended up with a lot of packages.

As EmberData (now "WarpDrive") separates from Ember main I wonder if @tanstack.com Query at least at the lower QueryClient level might work with @emberjs.com #emberjs
I'm a fan of the superduper fetch approach plus an ORM with simple models and an async client.populate(model, relations[]) method

I work on a separate library that is often paired (EmberData, now WarpDrive). That library is currently ~23kb, of which about 8kb will go away as we continue to modernize but about 4kb will get added to support new features we want.

That gets you more than anything offered by tanstack/apollo/mobx.
