#endangered/threatened-species
Last month the Trump administration determined that razing the habitat where endangered or threatened species breed, feed, and shelter would no longer face federal penalties. Hundreds of species are now at risk.

Meaning that two species suddenly thrust together after being apart for millions of years still have the ability to interbreed & that has implications for conservation & management.

I'll set aside the question of species definition, the takeaway is that life... uh... life finds a way.😺

Extinct, endangered, threatened — or none of the above? Scientists are logging “lost” species in a new journal as resources to protect sensitive flora and fauna shrink.

Nevada ranks 11th in the nation for biodiversity, but many of our state’s species are endangered, threatened or already extinct. A new journal seeks to document the species that are “lost” — the ones whose status scientists aren’t quite sure about.

Trump's Gutting of the Endangered Species Act Will Imperil Hundreds of Species
The Supreme Court once billed the Endangered Species Act as “the most comprehensive legislation for the preservation of endangered species ever enacted by any nation.” Federal protections have been key to saving nearly 300 U.S. species — including the bald eagle, American alligator, and grizzly bear — from permanent extinction. Each year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is primarily responsible for implementing the law, evaluates species and lists them as “endangered” or “threatened.” When federal activity or private development has the potential to harm a listed species or its habitat, project developers are required to consult with the Service or obtain a permit prior to construction. For the last several decades, the interpretation of two words in particular — “take” and “harm” — have formed the backbone of the Nixon-era law. Its prohibition of “taking” an animal criminalized any attempts to “harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, or collect” at-risk species. And the provision on “harm” ensured that degrading a listed species’ habitat could be penalized. These definitions have been key to the success of the law. But that all changed last month when the Trump administration determined that razing the habitat where endangered or...
