Breaking the Cycle Between Food Production and Environmental Decline
URBANA, Illinois, US, May 6 (IPS) - A newly published review in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment has revealed disturbing statistics on the growing environmental threats posed by global food production. The global food system, designed to feed and nourish humanity, is now a major contributor to climate change via greenhouse gas emissions, and the largest driver of freshwater depletion, biodiversityloss, and nutrient pollution. Alarmingly, this new review brings attention to a concerning cruel twist and a deeper problem manifested through feedback loops between environmental change pressures including climate change and global food production. In this vicious hard to break feedback loop, farmers are forced to use more inputs including fertilizers and toxic pesticides to sustain high yields, which in turn ruins and further compromises the environment while making food production harder in the long term. The central question then becomes: How do we break these vicious feedback loops that threaten to undermine our global food system in the longer term? What specific foundational strategies stand a chance of reducing environmental pressures and improving global food systems and agricultural production resillience? First and foremost, the foundations for breaking this cruel cycle begin in the soil, by investing in revitalizing and...

#Farmers caught in a system that penalizes #sustainability: input-heavy agriculture degrades the soil it depends on, yet policies and market incentives haven't shifted to reward soil-restoring practices that could break the cycle

Asia-Pacific set to miss most UN development goals as environmental decline deepens, report warns
The Asia-Pacific region is on course to miss 103 out of 117 measurable Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets by 2030, with environmental deterioration emerging as the most severe threat to the region’s development. According to the Asia and the Pacific SDG Progress Report 2026, released by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), climate change, biodiversity loss and weakening freshwater ecosystems are reversing decades of progress and exposing deep structural vulnerabilities. SDGs are 17 global targets adopted by United Nations member states in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet and improve well-being by 2030. They cover issues such as health, education, inequality, clean energy and climate action, and are used to track countries’ progress toward sustainable development. The ESCAP warns that progress on climate action (SDG 13), marine conservation (SDG 14) and biodiversity (SDG 15) is rapidly going backwards, while urban resilience is eroding, with repeated damage to critical infrastructure revealing a widening gap between climate planning and real-world preparedness. The region’s energy transition is also faltering: despite strong advances in electricity access, the share of renewables in the energy mix is declining, a trend the UN says is “fundamentally out of step”...
