Happy spring! It may be gross and rainy out and too cold for bees, but the spring ephemerals of Eastern North America all seem to be out east of the Mississippi! Come meet some friends in the woods near you!

Virginia spring beauty (Montiaceae: Claytonia virginica) is native to eastern North America and is common in deciduous woodlands. Like other spring ephemerals it flowers before trees leaf out, providing much-needed pollen and nectar for early-season insects. Blissfield Michigan, 21 Apr 2025.

The spring ephemerals haven't started flowering here yet, but the pansies, violas, and petunias in the greenhouse have. Blissfield Michigan, 11 Apr 2025.

Not cat related but joyful nonetheless: the spring ephemerals are coming up in the woods! Hepaticas, bloodroot, and Dutchman's Breeches are all blooming, trout lilies are abundant but not quite open yet, and my favorites the trilliums have buds!

Native Plant Nerd Alert! 🌿🌱

Let's talk about spring ephemerals. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO.

Spring ephemerals are flowers that appear in spring and then go dormant. They usually grow under deciduous trees and shrubs and complete their lifecycle before the trees and shrubs leaf out. 1/10

My favorite time of year for wildflowers. The ephemerals are starting to take over the forest.
