#ephemeroptera

Much like the mayfly (Ephemeroptera), the cinnamon roll (Tastius Pastrius), has an expected lifespan of only 5 minutes. Unfortunately for this poor creature, it enters the world fully self-aware, entirely comprehending its fate.

Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera?

Cool stuff, Id missed this until now. Always found it quite funny that this lineage of crustaceans spent all that time coming on to land and becoming insects, only for 2 branches (odonata and Ephemeroptera) to immediately go back with aquatic larvae! lol

New study builds Hong Kong's first #mayfly #DNAbarcode library: 146 sequences, 53 BINs, 7 possible new species. Combining morphology + genetics, researchers found mayfly diversity drops sharply with urbanisation. This library will help power future eDNA biomonitoring of #freshwater habitats:
The Hong Kong mayfly (Ephemeroptera) DNA barcode library: Integrative taxonomy enables regional species inventories and highlights the effect of urbanization on species loss
Freshwater biodiversity underpins ecosystem functioning but is rapidly declining due to urbanization and habitat modification, particularly in Southeast Asia where accurate species inventories remain ...

This Mayfly fact is about to live in your head rent-free

Swipe to see its card.
Card 333. Common. 50 XP.

A mayfly spends a year or more as a nymph underwater and often less than a day as a winged adult, with no working mouth at all, and it is the only insect that moults once more after

"Mayfly"?

Noun: any of an order (Ephemeroptera) of insects with an aquatic nymph and a ➡️ short-lived, fragile adult ⬅️ lacking mouthparts and having membranous, heavily veined wings and two or three long, threadlike tails

This is such a super photo! Would you be willing to let me feature it in the next (December) issue of the Mayfly Newsletter? You'd have full attribution, of course, but we have a zero budget, and I totally understand how you make a living, so let me know if I'm over-reaching (dc.swosu.edu/mayfly/)

2/2 There are about 316 Trichoptera species, 120 Plecoptera and 120 Ephemeroptera in Germany, compared with over 9500 Diptera. P and E don't wander far from water. Many small Diptera are likely wind-blown.
I think the point the paper makes is probably real, but the data may not prove it.

What can 50 years of freshwater monitoring reveal about river health? A new study documents major changes in the upper South Esk River’s aquatic invertebrates, suggesting a shift from a “clean, cold” river to one under increasing environmental stress.

Most Russian recruits have life expectancy of just 20 minutes on Ukraine front lines, chilling report claims
Once on the battlefield, Russian soldiers are being picked off in an average of 20 to 35 minutes, according to reports.
