#Desmodorids are usually parasited by #epibionts (suctorian ciliates). This is so common, that you can find them drawn on the original description of desmodorid species.

Tiny crabs discovered hitching rides on sea snakes

Known as epibionts, the most noticeable passengers are usually the algae and barnacles clinging to the marine reptile’s protective shell. Other epibionts include tiny crabs in the Planes genus who frequently hitch rides inside the crevices between a turtle’s shell and body. Biologists at the Florida Museum of Natural History recently confirmed a surprising addition to crustaceans’ roster of ocean taxis, however. After examining dozens of specimens collected during surveys off Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, researchers now know that some small crabs will occasionally climb aboard sea snakes. But these aren’t the Planes crabs the biologists expected. As they describe in a study published in the journal Ecology and Evolution, the clawed invertebrates instead belong to three species related to Planes within the same family. University of Florida (UF) marine herpetologist Joseph Pfaller first noticed one of the suspicious crabs...

Oral Actinobacteria sense and defend against parasitic epibionts
Bacteria contend with a wide range of antagonistic interactions from neighboring microbes. One widespread but poorly understood threat is posed by Patescibacteria, which proliferate by colonizing host...

Comparing Drone and Vessel‐Based Imaging to Quantify Epibiont Coverage on Humpback Whales
Cetacean epibionts offer noninvasive insights into host health, physiology, and spatial ecology, yet quantitative assessments in wild populations remain scarce. Although vessel-based observations may...

Chonotrichs supposedly live off whatever the ventilation current brings past the funnel, and on an alvinocaridid gill that current is already loaded with the shrimp's own chemosynthetic epibionts. Any sign they're grazing those rather than just perching?

Nearly all individuals of the genus Polycelis were covered by small, transparent epibionts. Further analysis showed that these animals are most probably of the species Urceolaria mitra. 2/4

Correct in thinking those are recent epibionts?

If the turtle survived with such amount of barnacles, it's certainly no sort of parasitism. Barnacles on sea turtles are epibionts, not true parasites. They attach to the turtle’s shell and benefit from being carried through plankton-rich water, without feeding on the turtle’s tissues.

Rolling in the deep: peculiar rolling behaviour observed in deep-sea anemones - Marine Biodiversity
Deep-sea anemones (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) are regarded as sessile organisms, living in fine sediments, attached to hard substrates, or living as epibionts on other organisms. Motility in Actiniaria is no...

The #ISTS44 sea turtle epibionts crew

I’m planning to embark on a journey to understand the diatom communities on sea turtle carapaces and what they can tell us about sea turtle migration.

I’ll be posting this week from the International Sea Turtle Society symposium in Hawai’i

Day 1 was full of fantastic workshops: in the morning I attended one about applying for research permits to study turtles, and my afternoon was all about sea turtle epibionts 🌊🐢

Just made the transition from Twitter (finally!). I’ll be posting updates on the progress of our various #seaweed #aquaculture projects here from now on. For now here’s an awesome community of epibionts I found living on our local fucoid #macroalgae from Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland

Just saw this recently deceased copepod with a hefty load of peritrich epibionts (I think Vorticella). Excited to see the egg sac with eggs that already have eyes developing. It's my first time observing this!

Central American Beaches Are Being Overrun With Local and Foreign Plastic
An image from the study illustrating how plastic bottles reach Latin American Pacific coasts. Illustration: Garcés-Ordóñez et al. (2025) (CC BY 4.0) The scientists found that, like other marine debris, the bottles and caps they retrieved were sometimes colonized by immobile organisms called epibionts, which live on the surface of other organisms or materials. The team found items with bryozoans, barnacles, and mollusks attached, with the presence of these correlating with the age of the plastic.
