I've seen similar descriptions/attitudes to people reading Cormac McCarthy and my knee jerk response is that men arent reading and writing them 'as much' because these books are not, and never were, big muscular super macho epics and actually spent time disassembling masculinity.

Epics are broken into books which are broken into cantos. Epics often start in media res (first canto is chronologically somewhere in the middle of the story) the books and cantos are not presented chronologically. She starts with lover which is somewhere in the middle of her story.

In terms of grand epics... Chronicles of Prydain? Five books, epic fantasy. One book will be too thin for ten hours, but all five should make for at least two seasons.

Something that didn't occur to me when I was pulling music for tomorrow.... most 60s songs are short (unless you go for crazy epics which I didn't). So instead of ordering my usual 55-ish amount of songs, it's 75. Gonna be a long night. 😄

Even among those, on a re-read it almost feels like Aragorn's sections of Lord of the Rings are like the traditional fantasy epics of manly honor and glory, while Frodo and Sam's journey feels like a subversion constantly going "OH FUCK, WHAT NEXT, FUCK ME" yet are the true heroes of the narrative.
