difficulty is a form of ergodic text!!!!!!!!!!! yes!!!!!!!!!!

(access is always a problem with ergodic text, this is something i have spent SO much time thinking about, there are no good answers, but i will die a sicko about ergodic narrative while also being super bad at the video game, so)
It's genuinely kind of weird how many "games as lit" people seem to be struggling to internalize that different storytelling mediums have the ability to communicate themes in a way that's unique to them and difficulty can be (but is not always) a way to do that

You have been visited by George Birkhoff's face of lines. Repent, or you will be forced to reprove the ergodic theorem from first principles.

👹

Middle kid (who has not yet read Rakesfall but is planning to at some point) has heard me ranting and cackling about this book & introduced me to the term ergodic literature. It seems to fit, mentally if not physically.

My final interview in the SPINE design series is w/ @liz-shrikestudio.bsky.social about what games can learn from House of Leaves. Liz discusses the implications of calling You Will Die in This Place a book versus a game, how metanarrative informs mechanics, and the paradox of unplayed indie ttrpgs.

This is not the greatest TTRPG in the world, no. This is just a tribute.

You guys are absolutely insane. The ergodic nature of how you READ Disco Elysium is in itself masterful

There is pleasure in the ergodic nature of adventures and splat books. Imagining consequences and connecting fragments.

i also think a lot of people conflate Having Important Things To Say with being ergodic like art/media is algebra homework but it isn't
