At least in the US, it's mostly an honor system with the ESRB. As the publisher/developer, you are expected to disclose and describe anything that *might* be notable and sometimes they don't even play the game at all before giving a rating.

they’re given presentations, which is why sometimes things slip through and cause problems
Oblivion had to be briefly pulled because of missed details that ESRB deemed too graphic for the rating

IIRC, at least for the ESRB, a lot of the content descriptors are self-selected by the publishers via questionnaire, plus the ESRB reviews gameplay footage submitted by the publishers of anything that could possibly be egregious relating to an age rating.
So yeah, they don't actually play the games.

Bloody Tears is my all time favorite Castlevainia song.
I first heard it in Castlevainia 4, which mashed the theme from the first 3 together.
The OG is from Simon's Quest.
But Belmonts Curse brings it new life.
This is peak music.

Oh, you're right. Somehow I missed the upside down exclamation marks on the back. Still pretty weird since ESRB ratings should only exist on North American games.

Btw. Is my copy of Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu Canadian? It has both English and French on the ESRB rating and back of the box. But it also says Middle East Southeast Asia official product on the back? And the lime green triangle?

PEGI bumped Marvel Rivals up to 16+, and it's probably not about the skimpy outfits 😏
For almost two years NetEase's hero shooter sat at T from the ESRB and 12+ from PEGI, but the latest update pushed it to 16+, same as the international IARC.

The ESRB for this was apparently leaked a while ago. Still wild that it's getting a remaster.

Saw a dev say valve's moderators are struggling to find "every bit of mentioned content" and started asking for builds that throws it all at them
They're becoming the ESRB (they do not play games, you make a video presentation of the game's contrnt to get a rating instead)

minor pet peeve is when sites with adult content represent "explicit" as "E" instead of "X". the ESRB has trained me to think that E stands for "everyone" and this is also the system that newgrounds uses
