It's a combination of the Italian "mezzo," which means "half" or "medium," and the Greek "-ode," meaning the path or shape of something. So Nephilopolis calling cyborgs "mezzodes" is basically derisively describing them as half a person, even if many don't view it as a slur ("mez" is a slur though).
