The story so far: Gwyneth Paltrow, who grew up in an interfaith Jewish-Christian family, appears in a commercial for a housing project in Herzliya that began airing earlier this month in Israel. Penthouses in the 51 storey twin tower development, named 51 Park, are said to be priced at $10m. For her services as the face of the project, Paltrow was reportedly paid a similar amount. Herzliya was named after the founder of political Zionism Theodor Herzl. It was built over the lands of three Palestinian villages that were ethnically cleansed & destroyed by Israel in 1948: - Ijlil al-Shamaliyya;­ - ljlil al-Qibliyya; and - al-Haram (Sayyiduna 'Ali). Nearly 2000 Palestinians lived on lands that are now occupied by Herzliya. There used to be schools, shops, and a library. A few homes & the Sayyiduna 'Ali mosque survived, though the cemetery around the mosque has been converted into a parking lot for tourists. In 1948, ljlil al-Qibliyya became the 1st & biggest Israeli­ concentration & forced labour camp where Palestinian men over 15 were taken following the colonization of their villages. Operating for 11 months, it included over 200 tents. Prisoners were starved, tortured, & killed.
