I would describe Carapichea ipecacuanha as a good model of ethnobotanic drug development. Using historical or folk usage of natural products as a target for drug research and development.

Improvements to emetine to increase clinical utility could be life saving.

There's plenty of archaeological, ethnographic, and ethnobotanic evidence for the use of Agave amongst the Hisat'sinom/Southern Sinagua people in the Verde Valley, up into the historic period, but I'm not aware of any at all amongst the ancestral and modern Pueblo populations. Why?
