#euhedral
I'm going with #Cassiterite ! Here with quartz and ankerite. From a friend's collection #MinCup26 ⚒️ #minerals

Sorry about your skull product. It's still largely intact thankfully, but it's since lost the edges and euhedral crystal faces that made it so alluring.

(They're actually quite pretty when they're euhedral. It's just they're basically never euhedral.)

Now I want a pretty, plain, euhedral feldspar crystal. 😕

A typical euhedral crystal of hornblende in the wall cladding of the Daisen Museum of Nature and History.

I feel like Kspar is under appreciated, but I like them, especially when the y are altered 😄 that euhedral one is huge!

These two are my favorite from my time at Bingham. The ksp phenocryst partially replaced by epidote is my favorite type of alteration. And the huge ksp pheno in the QLP? Excellent example of a euhedral feldspar.

I left this one there (for you to check out some day!), but I collected a smaller sample (with smaller, less euhedral garnets). ⚒️

Dexter is euhedral, no amount of change in the universe would prevent it from coming out.

Olivine- and plagioclase-phyric, vesicular basaltic glass in cross polarised light from Hawaii for #ThinSectionThursday. Olivine shows wide range of interference colours despite uniform composition. Much of the glassy groundmass is devitrified in rosettes around the phenocrysts. 🧪⚒️🌋

Hand sample of a granodiorite(?) from north of Carp Nv.

Used duckduckgo ai for an ai interpretation. Snippets of it’s thoughts are in alt

Personally, I am not very good a hand sample id’s.

Also, that agate bear is great! (and may show some "euhedral crystals" in the openings if I'm not mistaken (my vision is extra crappy because I'm not wearing my glasses today)

Spectacular olivine dolerite from Fair Head, County Antrim in XPL for #ThinSectionThursday. Olivine shows particularly vibrant interference colours while the ophitic intergrowth of twinned plagioclase and clinopyroxene is a textbook quality example. 🧪⚒️🌋

That’s what I’m talking about! As a geologist I’m interested in unusual crystals. Well meaning people sometimes buy me “pretty cut and polished rocks”. I’m polite but it’s not my thing. Give me a euhedral crystal of xenotime etc. That’s what I like.

(Long) Before mobile phones: hand drawn PPL and XPL views of porphyritic dolerite from Ben Hiant, Ardnamurchan, Scotland. From my undergraduate mapping report. #ThinSectionThursday 🧪⚒️🌋

I want to seem euhedral what is that

Guy that wants to seem super cool and euhedral: I don't even know who that is

And because those vugs have open space and there's none of the original fabric of the rock preserved inside them, any later precipitation inside them often isn't microcrystalline but instead euhedral little druzy crystal growths. That's how it happens, to my understanding.

One of the entrances to Jewel Cave. It's filled with euhedral calcite crystals with distinct "jewel-like" structures. Jewel Cave National Monument, South Dakota, 30 Jul 2025.

Revisiting this Honolulu Volcanics mantle xenolith which has a porphyroclastic texture. Note the bimodal grain size distribution of the olivines with large subhedral porphyroclasts and smaller relatively euhedral neoblasts in the matrix.

Euhedral and anhedral (Petrology 💎)

Euhedral and anhedral are terms used to describe opposite properties in the formation of crystals. Euhedral crystals are those that are well-formed, with sharp, easily recognised faces. The opposite is anhedral, which describes rock with a microstructure […]
