#EuropePMC 🧪 would seem to be a good alternative if #PubMed disappears..
If they pull PubMed, do we have a plan B? #academicsky?

Remember, EuropePMC is actually better than #PubMed because it includes ALL preprints in search results, not just those including NIH-funded research.

EuropePMC cannot be taken down by any US organisation. Maybe share this resource with colleagues, especially those in USA.
Not certain what is happening with PubMed - see banner headline below. I hope 🤞 it's not going down - just a lot of people searching and downloading records important to their field.

If PubMed does goes down use @europepmc.org it includes current PubMed abstracts plus a lot lot more.

PubMed war wohl "nur" wegen eines DNS Problems down, hat aber gut gezeigt, wie abhängig wir davon sind.
Ich zumindest werde versuchen, die nächste Zeit mit EuropePMC warmzuwerden.

Is there a list of mirrored US public databases to European ones or others, e.g. PubMed -> EuropePMC, GenBank -> ENA, RCSB -> PDBe, etc.?

You know, just in case?

EuropePMC has all of it. Worst case scenario, I hope they could do something like turn to DOIs as a data source, instead of just a data linkage. OpenAlex could step up too.

EuropePMC ist die europäische Alternative zu
PubMed und jetzt schon besser.
Für die Forschung wird es in den kommenden Jahren heißen: go Europe.

fantastic - EuropePMC includes bioRxiv results from outside US as well; I didn't realize that!

#Pubmed is unreachable from Melbourne, Australia, just now. But as noted upthread, EuropePMC is available, and the #SafeguardingResearch project has backup copies.

Does anyone know if EuropePMC (1) contains all of NCBI PMC/PubMed and (2) is independently backed up and hosted from NCBI?

(1) lühike nimekiri resurssidest, mis on praegu ligipääsmatud, sest .nih.gov lehed on maas
PubMed - massiivne bioloogia- ja meditsiiniteaduste andmebaas, peamine andmebaas, kust arstid teaduskirjandust otsivad (alternatiiv: EuropePMC; lisan kusagil allpool veel alternatiive)

I doubt we need a plan B, though who knows in this upside-down world?

But if we did, off the top of my head I suppose it would be something like EuropePMC turning to DOIs as the source, instead of only data linkage.

Academic systems (not just funding, but also granting systems, research organizations and publication systems). I have even changed from recommending PubMed to EuropePMC to my students because I also distrust their ability of the NIH to work independently of government interference.

EuropePMC does not have all the functionalities but it is a 99% good alternative and it is in Europe.
March 2, 2025 at 3:54 PM
PubMed is funded and maintained by the National Library of Medicine/NIH at ~$300M/year. EuropePMC is maintained by EMBL and mirrors PubMed (abstract/citations) and PMC (full-length manuscripts). I don't know that if PubMed went Error 404 (for $ or other reasons), would EuropePMC be ok? Probably?

I suggest more US scientists learn to fight for our resources and hopefully not just concede by switching to EuropePMC and Sci-hub.
As we can expect PubMed dysfunction more and more or to be swamped with fake journals I suggest you get acquainted to this nice alternative: europepmc.org

EuropePMC relies on a feed (feeds ?) from PubMed.

As I understand, it can run on its own, but I do not know how it will get updated and synchronised with PubMed. Though it does collect some data separately.

I hope EuropePMC had prepared as much as they could for this predictable event.
