excellent read and v relevant to MMD's piece yesterday:

‘Using “populist” instead of more accurate but also stigmatising terms such as “far-right” or “racist” acts as a key legitimiser of far-right politics’

‘Instead, we witness either a euphemisation or exceptionalisation of far-right politics’
"We cannot pretend to stand against the far right while referring to its politics as “legitimate concerns”."

I wrote this short piece two years ago and it's got a lot worse with that fascist-enabling Labour government

Look to the mainstream to explain the rise of the far right
Extremists are not ‘capturing’ our systems – they are part of them.

“The continued exceptionalisation of antisemitism, treating it as a standalone or special type of racism…….. is a recipe for the continued use of Jews as political footballs by both major parties and the entrenchment of anti-Jewish attitudes.”

Law and order crackdown won't make Jews safer
Jewish communities deserve real protection — not a false sense of security purchased at the expense of other marginalised groups.

Recently, @k8ebrown.bsky.social and I outlined how the mainstream media has actively mainstreamed far-right politics through processes of exceptionalisation, amplification, deflectionand, euphemisation, trivialisation, humanisation and idealisation

In the book, we develop in particular the role played by liberal and illiberal articulations of racism - the latter's exceptionalisation leading by contrast to the former's acceptance and mainstreaming

It contributes to the fledgling literature on the role the media plays in the mainstreaming of racism and the far right. It illuminates how processes of euphemisation, exceptionalisation and humanisation can lead to their legitimisation even when opposed by the filmmakers

Depends, rlly. I mean, politicians are often incoherent (& justificatory explanations, esp inre state terrorism, are generally left to academics to undertake), but the exceptionalisation of particular acts as being 'political' in nature otherwise forms a mundane part of public discourse. >

However, we need to reflect on two potential problems:

1. Euphemisation: populism & nativism are less stigmatising & accurate than racism;

2. Exceptionalisation: relying on party categorisation risks implying the far right are exclusive harbingers of exclusionary politics.

The historical exceptionalisation of fascism and its persistent detachment from ‘mainstream’ racism/the racial state has done great damage

Consequently, this exceptionalisation conceals the EU's own exclusionary practices, particularly regarding migration policy, shifting attention away from the Union's failures to uphold its stated principles.

The first paper w/@aurelmondon.com, K Okonkwo & F Bremner examines how the far right is portrayed in documentaries. We find that although film-makers adopt an ostensibly critical stance, far-right actors strategically use the platform to normalise their politics. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Zionism is on the side of Nazis so long as Nazis support their pet colonial apartheid project. Both desire the intense isolation and exceptionalisation of Jewish people; both rely on anti-semitism to justify the unjustifiable. Both are racist ethnonational ideologies.
