Wait, I didn’t hear about Exoparia. Whats that?

Paleontologists have found evidence of a previously unrecognized soft tissue structure in the cheek region of many dinosaur species, which they’ve called the exoparia.

Also I haven't taken a look at the mouth since the whole exoparia thing happened but covering in something is pretty safe because of their relatives having osteoderms in their 'cheeks'

Trying out a more full exoparia muscle on Tyrannosaurus rex. I might understand it better this time, but also maybe not. Parrot and turtle influence, no jugal horn but some feature scales to mimic the vibe. #paleoart #sciart

Am I more or less understanding the hypothesized exoparia dinosaur jaw muscle? Sketched over a Tyrannosaurus rex skull. Link to the paper here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... #paleoart #sciart #dinosaur

Loving how you managed to incorporate the "exoparia" ligament/muscle without sacrificing gnarly, pointy ornamentation!!

How much exoparia covers and what would depend heavily on the thickness and nature of the exoparia no? My understanding is that it's relatively then sheet off tissue.

For this reinterpretation I removed the crocodile-like skin, which skin studies say is probably not accurate, and I added the exoparia muscle. I’m still getting used to drawing it 🦖

I actually drew this last year before Hank’s awesome exoparia paper, it’s just that I was already putting rictus tissue over the jaw muscles
