Living overseas doesn’t erase your U.S. filing obligation. The U.S. taxes based on citizenship, not just where you live, and that surprises a lot of people. #expattaxes #ustax #americansabroad #foreignincome #irshelp

The danger isn’t just the tax bill. Wait too long and you lose control, leverage, and options with the IRS. Earlier action usually gives you a better path. #irsproblems #taxresolution #expattaxes #ustax #irshelp

#ExclusiveCitizenshipAct has raised questions for Americans abroad.

The key takeaway: nothing has changed.

Dual citizenship remains legal, and #ExpatTaxes compliance as usual. Staying informed helps reduce uncertainty

The FEIE stacking rule is the thing most expat guides skip. FEIE excludes your foreign earned income from US taxes. What it does not do is remove that income from the calculation that sets your rate on everything else. Here is how it works. (1/4) *(270 chars)*

FEIE zeros your tax on foreign earned income. It does not zero your rate on passive income. Exclude $90K, collect $20K in dividends: those dividends are taxed at the $90K marginal rate, not from the bottom. That is the stacking rule. *(258 chars)*

Medellin: $1,000-1,600/mo. Colombia digital nomad visa bar: roughly $1,100-1,400/mo. Accessible entry. But 183 days in a calendar year triggers worldwide tax residency at up to 39%. No US-Colombia income tax treaty to soften it. *(257 chars incl. hashtags)*

Colombia's outgoing government filed its fifth tax reform this week. Inside: the wealth-tax floor drops from 72,000 to 40,000 UVT, roughly $1.1M down to about $620K of net worth, nearly tripling who pays. Passage is doubtful, but the direction matters.

The expat catch: contributions need earned income inside your US tax base. The FEIE excludes $132,900 in 2026. At $300K of profit that still leaves a ~$167K band to fund from. Below ~$150K, the FEIE-vs-FTC fork decides whether this works at all.

The IRS treats foreign currency as property. Spend euros that gained value since you got them and a gain over $200 on one transaction is ordinary income, all of it. Losses on personal spending? Never deductible. Section 988(e), the rule nobody reads.

The lever you control: the tax hits only the lesser of your investment income or your excess over the line. Spread gains across years, keep exempt income out of the formula, and the exposure shrinks.

The foreign tax credit cannot offset the NIIT. Congress placed it in chapter 2A. The credit only covers chapter 1 taxes. Legal placement as tax design. Two treaty cases won at trial, both now on appeal.

The FEIE excludes wages. Not dividends, gains, or rent. For the threshold test, excluded wages get added back. A $95K return can show the IRS $230K when it tests whether the 3.8% fires.

Americans abroad have a 3.8% surtax on investment income that neither the FEIE nor the foreign tax credit can fully stop. Here is why the system is built that way.

The NIIT threshold has been frozen since 2013. $200K single, $250K married. 13 years of wage growth, no adjustment. For expats, excluded income gets added back to the test. The threshold sees more than your return shows.

If you zero out your income with FEIE, you zero out your IRA contribution room. Taxable compensation is what matters—exclude it all, contribute nothing.

The FEIE doesn't cover Social Security, pensions, or 401k withdrawals. If you're living on retirement income abroad, you need the Foreign Tax Credit instead. Most advisors miss this.

Missing a few years of U.S. filings is usually fixable. Missing a decade changes the game — more accounts, more variables, more penalties stacking on penalties.Timing is the single biggest lever you still control. Use it before the IRS takes it.#ExpatTaxes #USTaxes
