The Death of Expertise 👇
This, my comrades, is why Proportional Representation is not a great idea.

Imagine trying this with 350 million people across 50 states

Privatization of expertise is exactly that, consolidation of knowledge and power.
October 30, 2026 at 8:38 PM
more than a little bit of speculation here but “subject matter expert extends expertise to new domain” is extremely, extremely shaped like LLM augmentation (laudatory)

Really digging the bottom of the barrel for political expertise.

Physio-Expertise ohne Schwurbel gibt es bei @nordvvind.eurosky.social!

Honestly there’s something weird going on with America’s hatred of expertise. “Politician” is a job, and we should in fact elect people with the skills to do the job we are hiring them for.
I don’t really think “not a politician” should be a selling point for a candidate. The job is politician. I want to elect someone who understands that job and is good at it and also is not a dirtbag. We have seen how catastrophic it is to make “not a politician” the priority over “not a dirtbag.”

Expertise at recognizing the game comes with experience.

Also calls me a "watchdog"? These men can't help themselves with the way they like to dismiss my actual expertise.

Friendly reminder that Douthats CV before 60 Minutes was NYT columnist and senior editor at The Atlantic in case you were wondering whether having a byline at a famous publication is any indication of intelligence/expertise, or if it's something else altogether.
Abdul El Sayed on 60 Minutes last night:

"I don't ever get the question, "Does Palestine have the right to exist?"

I don't ever get the question, "Does Israel have the right to do a genocide?"

I don't ever get the question, "Does Israel have the right to our tax dollars?""

A common thing is to ask the highest level engineers to design learning norms for the junior devs on their teams but honestly, domain expertise in software isn't the same as domain expertise in learning science. We should support those folks better!

I should probably think about this more and include a section in a book about the different forms of expertise
Yes, that would be annoying AF...

But then, expertise takes many forms. Credentials awarded based upon academic matriculation are only one form. Doubtless there are many other people here who have paid more than sufficient attention to politics over time to have developed highly informed opinions.

(So absolutely no relevant expertise)

O prestígio, na nossa sociedade, está ancorado na expertise em determinados campos. E a principal instituição que chancela essa expertise são justamente as universidades.

Aí a dúvida sobre onde esses influencers estão no âmbito do ensino superior.

holy shit. rentseeking/gatekeeping, but instead of a few assholes with narrow and deep expertise in diverse fields doing it, a few assholes with narrow and shallow borrowed expertise in 1 field are doing it
October 30, 2026 at 9:20 PM
Check out the expertise reversal effect! Experts and beginners do *not* always benefit from the same types of practice and problem solving.
Good thread. I've talked about friction and junior engineers a lot, so to be clear, I mean "productive friction."

Also I suspect that what is productive friction for a junior engineer is often unproductive friction for a senior engineer.
Unproductive friction:
- unnecessarily blocks you from some better use of time
- learning gains that generalize diminish but task doesn't diminish (ie rote work)
- could be interesting for a diff learning goal but not the one at hand (eg kids struggling with math word problems bc of reading skills)

Zum Zustand der Krawall-Expertise
November 2, 2026 at 6:53 PM
THIS. This is the key issue. Where do these people think this abdication of expertise leads?
November 1, 2026 at 7:44 PM
Unless someone says “I’m looking for advice” DO NOT SPEAK.

And even then - do you have familiarity with what they’re asking for? Personal experience? Expertise? Actual knowledge that’s not just Google and vibes?

If the answer is no, continue to keep your fucking mouth shut.

"Please take a look at this jumbo vegetation."

"Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, that's clearly outside of my realm of expertise."
November 1, 2026 at 1:09 AM
Thank you for writing this. “it lets you work outside your core expertise” is particularly insidious bc it give the illusion that the real work is in prompting AI to get results. Like you said, domain expertise is absolutely required to understand what it spits out
October 31, 2026 at 8:32 PM
oje, was für eine Expertise.
