Recently recieved a DHS/Customs/FedEx bill for the aluminum tariffs on an Etsy purchase back in August.
(The chain isn't optional when buying the sterling charm and it has aluminum in the clasp)
Thought it was a well made scam letter but it turned out to be very real. 🤨

"attributing mental states is useful for predicting behavior"

my guy, you'd get the same result if you just remembered that their extrusions are fully based on training data made by people with mental states.

Just saw someone complaining about anti-AI slop.

They intended the phrase to be read as “anti-AI” slop; they were trying to insult people against AI by using the same word, slop, that so accurately reflects the mediocre extrusions of LLMs.

Of course it just reads as anti-“AI slop”, which…well […]

Most of the mods I've added haven't been very expensive, fortunately:

- Lots of 3D printed stuff: structural reinforcements on the X and Y axes, feet, limit switch holders, caps for the alumnium extrusions, etc.

- The 3040 upgrade, which takes it from 30x18cm of work space to 30x40cm.

Calling AI extrusions ‘art’ is a category error, unless one’s definition of art is so debased that it can be wholly reduced to whatever brain chemicals are being released from the stimulation of experiencing something.

I kept seeing sliding window locks blamed for failures, but the weak point is often the aluminum around them. I wrote about how alignment, fasteners, heat movement, and thin extrusions decide whether a lock actually works.
https://meichenwindows.com.au/window-locks-for-sliding-aluminium-windows/
Why Sliding Window Locks Fail on Aluminum Frames
The Lock Is Only as Strong as the Aluminum Around It Most sliding window lock failures are misdiagnosed. The lock gets blamed because it is the part people touch, hear, lubricate, replace, and curse when it refuses to engage. But in many failed sliding aluminum windows, the lock is not the weak poin

I wrote about why custom aluminum windows don’t really start with the frame or glass—they start with the opening. A few millimeters in the wrong place can turn a “perfect” custom unit into a costly headache.
https://meichenwindows.com.au/custom-size-aluminium-windows/
Custom Aluminum Windows Depend on Opening Measurement
The Opening Is the Real Specification for Custom Aluminum Windows The most expensive mistakes in custom aluminum windows rarely start in the factory. They start at the opening. A fabricator can cut aluminum extrusions to tight tolerances. Glass can be ordered to the millimeter. Shop drawings can sho

I wrote this because AAMA paint specs get treated like a tiny finishing detail, but they’re really a lifecycle call. The wrong 2603/2604/2605 choice can look fine at delivery and get very expensive years later.

AAMA Paint Specifications: The Real Cost Control for Painted Aluminum Extrusions
AAMA Paint Specifications Are Really a Lifecycle Decision The most expensive mistake in painted aluminum extrusions is treating the AAMA number as a finishing detail instead of a service-life decision. On many projects, color gets all the attention. Architects debate whether the extrusion should be

I wrote about a mistake I keep seeing in aluminum extrusion design: treating the profile drawing like the finished part. The real cost usually shows up later—in coating, machining, assembly, and fixes nobody budgeted for.
https://www.shengxinaluminium.com/aluminum-extrusions-and-fabrication-from-raw
Aluminum Extrusion Design Starts With the Finished Part
The Finished Part Should Control the Extrusion Design The most costly aluminum extrusion mistakes rarely happen at the press. They begin earlier, on a profile drawing that treats the extruded shape as if it were the finished product. That assumption is usually wrong. A profile still has to be stretc

I really like this from @doctorow.pluralistic.net

LLM outputs as *extrusions*

Our own involuntary hallucinations invest AI with ~subjectivity~ as when reading a novel.

Except AI outputs have no (singular) author, & correspond to no (one) underlying set of (human) choices.

Generative AI was at first amusing to me, funny the way it's funny when people whisper to dice before they throw them, as if intention can affect outcome. Now it leaves me unmoved. Generative AI extrusions are the same as all products of AI because the same random plagiarism underlies them.
