#f31
Wow. "NIH" canceled my co-mentored (with Dave Sulzer) PhD student's F31 funding. His work is on understanding the genetics and neuroscience of language learning disorders. F31 provides no indirect $ to Columbia, just pays his salary. Not that it should matter, but he's an American citizen. W.T.F.

MY F31 WAS REVIEWED AND SCORED I AM SCREAMING

The NIH has a predoctoral fellowship called the F31. A subsection (F31 Diversity) is earmarked for diverse candidates, many of whom would have been a shoe-in for regular fellowships. All those applications are being thrown out rather than integrated into the larger pool. Segregation is the point.
I got the screenshot from a reliable source, but you don't have to take my word for it. bsky.app/profile/jlwe...
The CSR comm I'm on just pulled all Diversity F grants from the current review cycle. These apps are reviewed alongside (and by the same criteria) as all other F grants. So, instead of helping these trainees, they will actually be punished by having their grant reviews delayed at least 1 cycle !?!?

My trainee's F31 diversity from NIDDK "terminated" today. We received a NGA for $0.00.

He worked his butt off for it and would have been competitive in the normal F31 pool. This is just blatant discrimination. If there are large lawsuits being put together, please share that info. #contractlaw
All NIDA F31 diversity scholars officially losing their funding...

I barely have words.

Expected at this point but so so disappointing and unfair. We are effectively punishing some of America's best science students for telling the government they are from an underrepresented community.

URM trainees applied for the f31-D b/c it was a better fit for us. our apps are now being trashed instead of being diverted to the standard f31 pool. we could withdraw & resubmit to the standard f31 in april, but nih has scheduled *dramatic* changes to the app format & criteria for next cycle

Absolutely GUTTED for the PhD students getting their F31’s cut. This is ILLEGAL. We are standing with you ❤️

F31-diversity proposals are similar enough to F31 proposals that it would be straightforward for NIH to transfer these to the F31 instead of refusing to review them
Encouraging underrepresented minorities to apply for diversity fellowships instead of other programs and then canceling those programs after submission is perverse discrimination.

Apparently I should go on vacation more often. Congratulations @biophysgal.bsky.social on your well-deserved F31 NOA!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Super proud!!!!

And most of them could have just submitted a regular F31, not an F31-Diversity. My lab has had both recently. They're the same except for an institutional letter of support. A rational approach (to a despicable situation) would have cut those letters and folded the apps into the general F31 pool.

My trainee just sent me this notification from the NIH about a pending F31 application.

We knew it was likely to come, but it still hurt to read the words.

If you have questions about the NIH F31 grant situation, @sweeneytoddsgf.bsky.social is affected and is kindly explaining.

Just said goodbye to my NIH MIRA award. Really hurts to see the word “terminated” in writing. Even worse to see it next to the F31 awarded to a fantastic PhD student in my lab @aybv.bsky.social. I REFUSE to let this stop us!!!
