🧠 A study uses simultaneous wide-field Ca2+ imaging and fMRI to uncover the neural origins of quasi-periodic patterns (QPPs) in fMRI. Cortex-wide Ca2+ activity closely tracks and predicts fMRI-QPPs, revealing a direct link between neuronal dynamics and fMRI.

Looking for a…dynamic read? Our QPP paper is out!!
We established quasi-periodic patterns of brain fluctuations using our simultaneous Ca2+/fMRI data. We observed a *familiar* “delay” in the fMRI QPP compared to Ca2+, and predicted the fMRI QPP from the Ca2+ one…🐭🧠🧲 pretty cool if you ask me!!

excited to introduce the Stanford Digital Brain project! combining data from our OPM system and 7T fMRI scanner, we aim to build a comprehensive model of human brain function in health and disease
Introducing the Stanford #DigitalBrain Project!

This new initiative will use advanced brain imaging and machine learning to build predictive models of human brain activity and lay the groundwork for more personalized treatments for brain disorders.

This is great! We have a paper coming out soon that combines human fMRI and monkey LFP/spikes and finds parallels and differences.

Why bother with MEG and EEG, when fMRI exists?
fMRI tracks blood flow,
which arrives seconds after neurons fire.
An epileptic spike spreads in milliseconds.

I'm delighted to share our new study, now published in Imaging Neuroscience: "Endogenous suspension of phenomenal consciousness during extended cessation: Regional homogeneity analysis of multi-participant 7T fMRI of an advanced meditative endpoint"

This is clear cut a case of "is our model actually correct" as I've ever seen. It assumes that fmri tasks show robust contrast differences by virtue of being fmri, and that the linguistic labels they test have neural correlates (eurgh that term) separable at posthoc.

All big assumptions.

This is relevant to a discussion @gershbrain.bsky.social and @behrenstimb.bsky.social were having about fMRI vs neurophysiology. It doesn’t have to be one or the other, especially in NHPs. Great stuff @desrocherslab.bsky.social. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Using 7T fMRI, we intensively scanned advanced meditators across EC sessions, and also during non-meditative control tasks. Retrospectively describing how they experienced EC, the meditators reported a complete absence of thought, bodily sensation, feeling, and experience during the state.
