From the gallery wall label: This striking, newly acquired, head study reveals the expressive immediacy and experimental spirit of Lorenzo Tiepolo, the youngest son of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and brother of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo. Lorenzo, who died early at thirty-nine, drew inspiration from the character head studies developed by his father and brother-examples of which are on view nearby-adopting their formats, techniques, and interest in capturing vivid human expression. Yet this sheet also highlights Lorenzo's distinctive contribution to the genre. Departing from the family's preference for blue paper, he worked here in black-and-red chalk on white paper, achieving a heightened sense of warmth and naturalism. His bold cropping and unconventional pose, which partially obscures the face and concentrates expression in the mouth, create a striking intensity. In its daring close-up and fluid handling, the drawing anticipates a modern sensibility for its directness and vitality.
