My photo collage shows four hippo statuettes made of Egytian blue faience, a ceramic material made of ground quartz. Their bright-blue shiny bodies are decorated in black with depictions of Nile river plants such as water weed and lotus flowers. This decoration depicts their marsh habitat as well as having various layers of symbolism associated with regeneration. For example lotus flowers open in the morning and close at night, symbolising rebirth. Blue faience hippos have been found in Middle Kingdom tombs of high ranking officials. It’s thought they were placed in the tombs to aid the rebirth of the deceased. Hippo top left - Walking hippo shown in profile facing right. Height 11.5 cm, Length 21 cm. Egyptian Museum, Cairo. Top right - Roaring hippo (looks like the hippo is smiling), seated, with head at left and turned inwards to front. Height 7.5 cm, length 12.5 cm. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen. Bottom left - Standing hippo in profile facing right. This hippo is part of the Met Museum’s collections and is popularly known as ‘William’. My photo shows an ancient Egyptian statuette of a reclining/resting blue faience hippopotamus on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Egyptian faience is a ceramic material with a bright blue glossy glaze. The hippo is viewed from the side profile with head on the right turned towards the viewer. It is decorated in black pigment with outlines of lotus plants and water weeds which grow in the hippo’s Nile habitat. Dated Middle Kingdom, 11th Dynasty, c. 2134-1991 BC. Blue faience hippos have been found in Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate period tombs. It’s thought they were placed there to help the rebirth of the deceased. Associated with the life-giving Nile, regeneration, and rebirth.

I have long found fragments of ancient artifacts to be fascinating - like a piece of a missing jigsaw puzzle. Here we have a brilliantly colored fragment of a faience statuette of the goddess Venus, rising from the sea, wringing out her hair (Aphrodite-Venus Anadyomene). #MetMuseum 🏺 1/

The missing lower portion of this intensely blue-green faience statuette makes it difficult to determine if the woman depicted was clothed. However, her preserved left hand, which pulls back her hair, recalls the gesture of Venus after she emerged newly born from the sea - Aphrodite/Venus Anadyomene - the subject of a famous Greek sculptural type of the third to second century BCE. Some other faience statuettes of Venus Anadyomene still exist, such as the one at the Brooklyn Museum, in which the goddess is naked (she is always naked in this type of sculpture, as she's rising from the sea or her bath). Roman, late 1st century BCE-early 1st century CE. Height: 5 5/16 in. (13.4 cm) Met Museum, New York (17.194.1662)

My photo shows two blue-green Egyptian faience hippopotamus figurines displayed on a white museum surface at the Neues Museum in Berlin. The larger hippo on the right sits upright on its haunches with short front legs planted forward, head turned to the left with mouth open, as if smiling. It is 9 cm in length. The smaller hippo on the left lies in a reclining or resting pose, with body close to the ground. It measures 4.8cm in length. Both are decorated with black lotus flower and aquatic river plant motifs. The museum display makes them appear like a mother and her baby hippo! 🥰 Egyptian blue faience is a ceramic material made of ground quartz. The decoration depicts Nile river plants such as water weed and lotus flowers found in their marsh habitat. In ancient Egypt lotus flowers were associated with regeneration as they open in the morning and close at night, symbolising rebirth. Whilst ancient Egyptians were well aware of the danger and destructive power of hippos, they were also seen as an animal with revitalizing power. An animal from the fertile mud of the Nile, fiercely protective of their young, hippos embodied divine powers guaranteeing rebirth. Blue faience hippos have been found in Middle Kingdom tombs of high ranking officials. It's thought they were placed in the tombs to aid the rebirth of the deceased.

Blue faience statuette of Aphrodite Anadyomene. The goddess is shown entirely nude, her hands raised to wring out her hair. At her left is a greatly schematized urn with a garment thrown over it. She stands on a round base with mouldings. A true product of a multicultural society in Ptolemaic Egypt, this statuette combines a classical image of the Greek goddess Aphrodite appearing from the sea, just born, with the typically Egyptian material, faience. Egyptian artists achieved the characteristic brilliant blue of faience in a complex process combining ground quartz with a mixture of alkali. Condition: Right hand missing. Two large areas of glaze missing from the upper rim of the base, one extending almost entirely across the back of the base and the other more than half-way across the front and including part of the left foot. A very small chip off the vase at the foot of the statuette. A small chip near the right knee of the figure, which shows the undarkened white body of the piece. Senet gaming board and gaming pieces made of blue faience, c. 1390–1353 BC.

Popular in ancient Egypt, Senet is one of the world’s earliest board games. It was associated with the soul’s journey to the afterlife and senet game boards were often placed in tombs. Brooklyn Museum 📷 by me

My photo shows an ancient Egyptian Senet gaming board made of bright blue faience with a separate sliding drawer for storing the thirteen blue faience gaming pieces. Eight of the faience gaming pieces are reel-shaped and five are semi-conical shaped. The side of the gaming board is decorated with alternating ‘Isis Knot’ and ‘djed pillar’ symbols. The gaming board dimensions are 5.5 x 7.7 x 21 cm. On display at Brooklyn Museum. Museum Catalogue game board description: Top of board divided into thirty compartments with dividing lines glazed black. Four squares inscribed with numerals and a nefer sign. Long sides decorated with painted design of seven panels, each with alternating ankh and ded signs. Solid end bears painted Horus name (Amenhotep III?) ‘beloved of Amon.’ Open end pierced twice on one side. Base glazed black. Ends of drawer glazed dark and light blue in checkerboard pattern. Base and interior of drawer glazed dark purple-blue. Front of drawer pierced with four small holes (for handle?); sides pierced three times and two times-purpose not evident. Condition: Object has been assembled from fragments. Extensive scattered areas of plaster restoration. The drawer was probably originally much longer. Glaze worn in spots. Numerous firing cracks.

Lotus was an important symbol in ancient #Egypt. It was associated with rebirth and rejuvenation.The plant was also valued for its pain-relieving properties. Ca 1,400 BC, from Theben.
