Happy Monday all (Oxymoron). Today we have an American kestrel (Falco sparverius). San Benito County, California. Fun fact: Falcons are not related to hawks and eagles. They are more closely related to parrots than other bird families.

This is interesting because caracaras, tgem being falconids, are regarded as raptors, or birds using their feet to kill or otherwise manipulate prey, by grasping action. (Their hallux works as thumb.) But caracaras use their jaws for that, using their feet to scratch dig, and sometimes push items.
What can a caracara do?

A new study shows these wild, island-dwelling South American falcons quickly solve artificial food-getting tasks. Being predators, they typically they ‘used their foot in a raking or kicking motion, and used their beak to peck, bite, and pull’🧪🪶

Ravens lack certain modifications to their foot seen in owls, accipitrids, and falconids, but not cathartids that evolved for manipulating prey, including the act of killing the victim. The reason is that they are not specialised hunters, but are generalised, carnivotous-leaning opportunists.

Scored between reveal an intermediate group, that includes waterfowl, falconids, accipitrids, penguins, and kingfishers.

Anseriforms independantly evolved towards an expanded nidopallium.

All of the telluravians are intermediate or higher, in their degree of nidopallial expansion.

Happy Saturday all. Today we have an American kestrel (Falco sparverius). Not a great picture-he was too far from me. But I rarely see these guys, so I wanted to capture him.
Fun fact-falcons are more closely related to parrots than they are to hawks.
