oh oh this reminds me that Dean Stockwell took my hand in both of his hands and gave me a lil grandfatherly pat. I'd whispered something to him very quickly (illegally—it was at one of those fancons and I didn't have $$) and he took both my hands and gave me the kindest, kindest smile. and pat.
LeVar Burton was INCREDIBLY warm, shakes your hand with both his hands, went out of his way to hype me up for literally no reason, and told me a tiny piece of TNG gossip that was harmlessly scandalous in a fun way. As a total latchkey kid I owe that man my literacy.

File 770 laughed at me a few years ago when I posted what I think is an obvious truth: that the female fandom of the Western pulps were a direct influence on Gernsback's creation of SF fandom. Hell, female Western fans were holding fancons before 1926!

yeah, to be fully clear, fancons and the folks who run that site do not at all endorse, they are simply a resource for information. they play the part of letting us know which shows have these red flags so con goers can make informed decisions about who to support.

FanCons Change Log:
• Images used in social media links to cons on FanCons via Bluesky, Discord, X, Facebook, etc are now higher resolution (when available) on all new cons going forward.
• TikTok link was removed from guest bios last night when they shut down. I guess I need to add that back.

The women of The Hollow Tree not only became pen-pals—they became friends. Some moved in with each other. Some found love with each other. And some--perhaps many--held small and medium-sized unofficial Hollow Tree Gang gatherings—the first modern fancons.

Since size management tech exists, I would imagine an equivalent to fancons where macros get small or micros grow big and they cosplay as either a normal job or their favorite media character.

All this before 1926, when AMAZING STORIES debuted. Did Hugo Gernsback (AMAZING's editor) know about what the women of the Hollow Tree Gang were doing? He must have. The success of WSM’s letters departments was known industry-wide; the fancons were known to other pulp editors.
