A little snippet from Name Her Holy for #FantasyBookFriday

Just some casual campfire conversation
Kye tilted her head down to catch her eye, widening her own ghoulish eyes for good measure. “Look at my face and tell me truly you want to go down the same path I’m on.” But Jude’s focus didn’t linger long enough to meet her gaze. It slipped, down to Kye’s mouth, below her chin and to the scars peeking out from her high collar. “Is that how you got those?” She whispered it. Curiously soft. As though she knew it wrong to ask but ventured a try anyway.

“Your first trial, honoring Litha, the summer Solstice, will perhaps be the most deadly of all 8 trials awaiting you. Your goal is this: to hunt. Prove that you have earned the right to call yourself a hunter. You may venture out of the shadow of the trees only when dawn rises."

There is much venturing and ADventuring in THE HOWLING DARK! 🐺🌗

#FantasyBookFriday
He ventured up a flight of stairs to the right, drawn by the strip of light seeping in under the door at the top. After a couple of tries—the space station handles he was used to weren’t round and didn’t rotate—he managed to crack it open. Through the gap: more wooden floors and wooden furnishings. The walls were made of wood paneling, too, and everything was bathed in a golden glow. Sunlight. It poured in through a large hazy window at the front of the building, lapping at his toes as he stepped farther out into the entrance hall. The brightest and warmest it had been since their arrival.

Fest and Anneke having a wee bit of a fire-related issue in the middle of their magical experimentation

( saranadosfiction.com/2021/07/10/s... )
The water hadn’t helped, of course. They’d emptied three buckets of the stuff over it, and succeeded only in drenching the front of Anneke’s robes and leaving a not insubstantial puddle on the floor under the table, which Fest had then had to go and find a mop to clean up. Other things that hadn’t helped had included throwing sand on it (once they’d finally managed to find some), smothering it in a blanket (it had, in fact, set the blanket on fire), exorcising it, swearing at it, and, when they’d run out of other options, asking it nicely if it would mind going away. So they were left with frayed tempers, a laboratory that looked distinctly the worse for wear, and, crucially, a fire still merrily burning in the middle of the table. To Fest’s eyes, it looked distinctly smug about the whole affair. “I suppose we *could* try banishing it,” Anneke ventured, after a moment. “We’d have to make a new circle, of course, and I don’t know how that would interface with the pieces of the broken one – it’s entirely possible that we’ll cause a power overload and blow up the entire laboratory, or maybe the entire floor of the building. Which would *definitely* upset the High Priest. On the other hand, I can’t think of anything else that we haven’t tried – or, at least, anything else that isn’t infinitely more dangerous – and it would certainly give us more information either way.” They ran a hand distractedly through their curls. “I mean, we won’t be able to make much use out of it if we’re dead, but that’s not permanent, and I’m sure between us we could remember enough that we’d have something approaching a proper writeup of the experiment. If we went and got someone to stand outside the door as an observer, then we could-“
