Y'all, any fanwriter worth their salt can tell you that the appeal mlm stories have for "straight" "women" is 50% "not having to deal with patriarchal violence', 50% 'oh shit, I don't think I'm a straight woman at all'.

Oh, and also: as a fanwriter, it means a lot when I get comments telling me that I did a good job emulating a canon character's speech patterns or mannerisms. Writing dialog that feels like it could fit into a cutscene is something I really strive for!

My favourite thing about bts info is the reminder that a TV show is a snapshot of a thousand different choices and accidents. There is no monolith to chip away at as a fanwriter, just a grain barrel to sink your hand into for pleasure, or to pick out the pebbles and take something away to cook with.

This case, which I'm familiar with, is a bit more complicated and falls squarely under "play stupid games, win stupid prizes." The fanwriter wrote Tolkien fanfic but then tried to claim ownership of actual Tolkien works.

I've been a fanwriter since my early teens, but there was a long stretch where I'd sort of drifted away from it. My AO3 account has a few very short WoW fics in it as well (and I would some day like to revisit a longer piece I abandoned), but XIV is what finally reignited the love for real.
