The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has issued a warning that disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could lead to rising global food prices within the next six to 12 months if governments do not take timely action. According to FAO experts, the conflict in the Middle East has created a chokehold on global energy supplies, which in turn affects fertilizer production and distribution through agrifood systems worldwide. David Laborde, director of the FAO's agrifood economics and policy division, noted that food prices have already begun to increase slightly after three months, with further rises and eventual food price inflation expected in the coming months. The impacts are anticipated to unfold in stages, beginning with energy costs, followed by higher fertilizer and seed prices, reduced crop yields, and ultimately higher commodity prices reaching consumers. FAO chief economist Maximo Torero emphasized the need for governments to enhance countries' absorption capacity and resilience to minimize these effects. The FAO Food Price Index rose for the third consecutive month in April, driven by elevated energy costs and related disruptions. Experts stress the importance of short-, medium-, and long-term solutions to prevent a severe food price crisis. This situation highlights the interconnected nature of global energy security, agricultural inputs, and food affordability, particularly for vulnerable populations in import-dependent regions. Prompt policy responses, such as diversifying supply chains and supporting agricultural resilience, will be critical in mitigating the projected economic pressures on households and food systems internationally.
