See also ganosis, which was an uncolored wax coating for sculptures, painted or unpainted.

Which will never *not* sound like a dread disease to me, even though I paint in encaustic, which may be the same kind of substance as ganosis was – Punic wax, whose exact nature has been lively debated.

This is not indicative of when she died, however, as the majority of Fayum portraits depict the subject in their youth rather than closer to the end of their lives.

Perhaps you have seen the Fayum mummy portraits! They are famous for how real they look, the faces of Roman elites from the past. This woman had her portrait made between 160 and 170AD, based on her trendy hairstyle and fashion inspired directly from the imperial women of Rome.

DYK #incest & sibling marriage were not #taboo in ancient Egypt? So it's possible that Fayum Dynasty depictions of #SameSex couples such as Idet & Ruiu and #Niankhkhnum & #Khnumhotep depict siblings AND spouses. Ghosts of #QueerHistory still haunt. HowSexGotScrewedUp.com

I looked it up and this is mumification burial with a Fayum portrait. These portraits were created in a Greco‑Roman realistic style and placed on mummies in Roman‑period Egypt, a fusion of Egyptian funerary tradition and Roman artistic portraiture.

From the Cabinet: a tube of 'Mummy Brown'. Victorian painters prized this rich sepia, ground - so the story ran - from Egyptian dead. When supply failed by the 1860s, artists wept for the pigment, not the pharaohs. Colour has its own archaeology. #VictorianEra #SherlockHolmes

Retrato de una noble del siglo IV encontrado en El Fayum, Egipto. No se conocen bustos ni imágenes de la reina Egilona, por lo que debemos imaginarla como una noble perteneciente a la más alta realeza visigoda.
