FDNY investigating smoke in 7 train tunnel near Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av
Firefighters are investigating a report of smoke on the 7 line between Long Island City and Grand Central this morning. The report came in just before 9 a.m. from the Manhattan-bound platform at the Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av station, according to FDNY radio dispatches. Transit officials told the FDNY the smoke appeared to be coming from the Manhattan-bound tube under the East River, and units were sent to both ends of the tunnel.

Why does FDNY want more kitchens? Surely they should want fewer of the type of room that produces more fires than other rooms?
October 1, 2026 at 1:04 PM
It’s illegal to build new SROs and has been for Gale Brewer’s entire time in government. A City Council bill to legalize them has FDNY-inserted poison pills (requiring a kitchen for every three units) that Council won’t challenge them on, and in any case, Gale never signed on and it hasn’t passed.

The Gangs of New York were the first FDNY. They would fight each other for the right to put out the fire and negotiate the price.

Crissy may not look like a firehouse dog but it turns out she was one- at least for a few weeks! Crissy was found tied up with a chain to an FDNY station in July. NYC’s Finest decided to take care of her in house to prevent her from having to go to the shelter. Unfortunately, having a firehouse dog long term really isn’t feasible in the big city so they made the difficult decision to surrender her. Before doing so however, they offered up some information of how she was in their care. She’s noted to be playful and tolerant of kids and strangers. She loves going on car rides and knows the cues sit, wait, go and get down. She is mostly housetrained, crate trained for up to 9 hours and is a hard puller on walks. Crissy loves “walks, bones, stuffed toys and spending time with her people.” Tomorrow marks two months of being in the shelter for Crissy. Over those two months she’s been happy and social, in spite of a stressful environment and living in a small shoreline cage for half of it. She loves spending time with volunteers, is always eager for a walk and LOVES snackies. She has been working with the behavior team engaging in training games and beginning muzzle training. Due to some fearfulness, Crissy is available to an experienced home with kids over the age of 13 and NO cats. She is approx 2 years old, 55 pounds and her ID is #261406

Whoah this is fascinating. Local Law 97 required some city facilities to switch from gas fired HVAC to electric heat pumps -> all one system, run year round -> system with refrigerants trigger Fire Code 606.1.1 even if refrigerant part is inactive -> significant additional FDNY credentialed staffing

It is great that she allocated money to volunteer fire departments across the state of NY. Engine 70/Ladder 53 is part of the full-service, government-funded FDNY, employing full-time paid firefighters.
