Two unusually long-legged cats have helped scientists uncover the first genetically confirmed cases of Marfan syndrome in domestic felines. Researchers at Cornell University discovered that the brothers carried two altered copies of a gene linked to the rare connective tissue disorder, which can affect the eyes, heart, and blood vessels. Surprisingly, the cats survived into adulthood because their genetic mutation still allowed some normal function.

A new international study suggests that researching cancer in domestic cats could provide valuable insights into human cancers due to significant genetic similarities between the two species. Led by scientist Louise van der Weyden at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, researchers analyzed tumor samples from nearly 500 cats and found notable mutations in genes equivalent to those in humans. The gene FBXW7, a key tumor suppressor, was frequently altered in feline mammary tumors, mirroring patterns seen in human breast cancer where such mutations are linked to poorer outcomes. Cats share a substantial portion of their genetic code with humans, more than many other mammals, making them potentially strong models for studying diseases. Additionally, pet cats often share environments with their owners, exposing them to similar environmental carcinogens. The study, published in the journal Science, identified genetic parallels in cancers affecting the blood, bones, lungs, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and central nervous system. Researchers noted that the chemotherapy drug vincristine showed effectiveness against cat mammary tumors, which could inform future veterinary treatments. This third-most-common feline cancer is often fatal. Experts like Geoffrey Wood emphasize the dual benefit: advancing treatments for cats while gaining knowledge that could help humans. While promising, researchers caution that more work is needed before these findings translate into new therapies. The research builds on prior work with dogs but addresses a previous gap in feline oncology studies. Overall, this collaborative effort across multiple countries marks an important step toward comparative oncology that benefits both species.
