We do not need the local ovine population dive-bombing innocent fellwalkers, thank you, do not give them ideas.

A ‘stile leading to steps’ combo on today’s Burton-in-Kendal Fellwalkers ‘mince pie walk’ on rather slippy local paths - ahead of a ‘Jacob’s Join’ gathering in the village hall. Bringing our 2025 walking season to a close. 🥾🥾🥾

Not all of the first fellwalkers were beardie blokes. Ronald Turnbull celebrates Dorothy, co-inventor of English Romanticism; her friend Mary; Mary’s maid Agnes; and the astonishing Miss Smith.

Fellwalkers start early! Any plans to climb Catbells, it’s a wonderful fell.

Lovely to see you both out. The snowfall is gentle at valley level as here in Geltsdale. High on Blencathra, and especially come tonight's frost, it will be treacherous. Sharp Edge and Hall's Fell in particular, no go places for non-Alpine trained fellwalkers.

It’s always nice to start a walk straight from the campsite and Chapel House Farm has the added benefit that I can have breakfast looking up at my first hill of the day, Rosthwaite Fell. Wainwright dedicates his book on the Southern Fells, the book I’m currently walking through to “The Sheep of Lakeland, the hardiest of all fellwalkers”. In what has been a sustained spell of dry weather these hardy Herdwicks are suffering a little.

An excellent day out with the Burton Fellwalkers yesterday. Took the Ullswater steamer from Glenridding to Howtown, then walked into Boredale to climb Place Fell. Returned via Patterdale. 1st #Wainwright of 2025 for me.
