@juliaserano.bsky.social 's book Whipping Girl is a famous discussion of how femininity is denigrated in our culture. It's great and really worth reading in regard to these issues. www.juliaserano.com/whippinggirl...

There are 2 paths to take in twink death.
You either take E to save your femininity, or T and embrace the masculine; the twink will die, but you can choose how you’re reborn.

Masculinity is to femininity as the colour green is to the electromagnetic spectrum.

Affirming Kiku trans femininity by adding her there

but also disrespecting Yamato trans masculinity by adding him there

Re-reading Whipping Girl and it's quite something to me that, twenty years later, @juliaserano.bsky.social's Trans Woman Manifesto resonates with me so much. That in 2026 this is still the work I should be doing as a transsexual woman. Inspiration to hold off the ever-foreboding doom. Thanks Julia.

...another way to conceptualize transmisogyny (not discussed in WG) is that it stems from the fact that both trans & femininity are "marked" (thus viewed as artificial & questionable) whereas cis & masculinity are unmarked. so transfemininity is "doubly marked" – see this 🧵 bsky.app/profile/juli...
🧵NEW VIDEO ESSAY: much of the focus of my post-Whipping Girl work (especially my books Sexed Up & Excluded) has been on understanding prejudice more generally & the role that "markedness" plays in how we (mis)perceive & (mis)interpret others. this video summarizes all that work! youtu.be/xiU-G0mTYVY

What‘s the scoop on republican men embracing their femininity and wearing poorly applied makeup in public? Hilarious 😂

This really made me feel quite sick to watch.

Firstly describing a NB child (assigned female at birth) as being ‘in flight from their femininity’?

Very very revealing language and shows the disturbing socially conservative agenda within her words
I didn’t clip the videos very well! My point in the first one was that this Bill is a nightmare for gender critics. This is backed up by Joyce later describing a conversion practice and then being upset that this might be captured by the Bill. 🤯

and suddenly, my femininity became my own personal hell.

does continuously being told femininity doesn't suit me count?

I grew up in a generation where boys were taught to hone in on any sense of femininity in their peers and torment those peers until the behavior ceased. This applied to classmates, sports teams, youth groups, and more. More important than grades or scholarships was rooting out femininity at any cost

Woke homophobia is so fucking funny it's hard to take it seriously

What the fuck do you mean "proximity to femininity"

Are there rigid tiers of femininity? Are gay men level 2 feminines?

There is much to be said about how patriarchal, capitalist and colonial it is to equate traditional femininity with "true womanhood".

But that's too much for the bandwidth of online discourse, and so into the safe familiarity of essentialism these angry internet gays go.

performing femininity for the female gays 💯

can't believe i have to practice femininity, it's not like cis women need to do that.

wait, they do? fuck

Trans men more than any other kind of men can be forgiven for recoiling from femininity given how it's forced on us, but we don't recoil anything like as much as the average right wing cis man

may be entering a phase of self discovery that involves going off of hormones and exploring femininity. Idk how to really talk about it, don't have the words. I got the changes I wanted that help me feel aligned, and now I feel secure to start investigating my identity more deeply now that I moved.

a bit of toxic femininity 💅

Yes this is perhaps the most standout example of why the distinction matters—experiences with transness for trans women are not always about femininity
