However, most species of salamanders don't do amplexus. They do internal fertilisation. Fertilisation would happen inside Janeway's body before she laid her eggs.
This isn't achieved by penetration. It's much weirder.

It is only about 3-4 days after fertilisation that the fertilised egg - by this point around 16 cells, and known as the morula - reaches the uterus. There is no way you can say that fertilisation occurs in the uterus, because it doesn't.

An extremely attractive form of White Ramping-fumitory seen at Lydd last weekend. This seems to fit Fumaria capreolata subsp. capriolata forma speciosa. The corolla turns bright crimson after fertilisation - known from the Channel Islands and Mediterranean.

Fertilisation (sometimes called "conception", as it is here) in mammals does NOT take place in the uterus. It takes place in the uterine tubes. Specifically, a part of the tube called the ampulla.

Fertilisation of a successful pregnancy does not happen in the uterus! (I mean I’m sure at some point it has but usually) it happens in the oviduct tubes. Sperm usually enters the tubes via the cervix then uterus, and implantation in the uterus follows several days after fertilisation.
This is all fascinating. Would the musket bullet have to have perforated the uterus? I’m not sure they handled those types of injuries well back when muskets were popular. And also, yes, antibiotics.
