I wish I could be more reliable about that kind of thing but I have odd work patterns and sometimes (like today!) I’m only coming online in the afternoon, which isn’t much use for FBOMD, especially for the Antipodean FirstBirders! Oh well. Thanks @tonyskerl.bsky.social for stepping up 😺

Morning, #FirstBirders! Here the swifts are very lively but the heat hasn’t properly kicked in. At least the balcony boxes are out of direct sunlight & are made of wood so the little ones should be OK. After 2 pm the sun’s gone so we can get more air on the balcony too 😺 #FirstBirdOfMyDay

Good day Sarah. #FirstBirders #FirstBirdOfMyDay is an American Crow flying over our house in Orono Maine.

Morning #FirstBirders
It’s been a lively start here, with two blackbirds exploring the lawn, a group of sparrows flitting around the bushes, and a chaffinch in the rowan.

Morning, Bluesky #FirstBirders 😺 Here in Poland the weather’s very dodgy so no swifts to report - #FirstBirdOfMyDay was a couple of Woodpigeons having a scrap in the sycamore opposite. But now one of the resident Swifts has just popped into its nestbox! (Didn’t see which one as I’m in the bedroom.)

Morning, #FirstBirders! Our swifts are very quiet this morning again - weather not conducive to socialising, I think. Nothing stops Mr Blackbird, though - he’s proudly staking his claim to his patch from the top of a sycamore opposite 😺 #FirstBirdOfMyDay

Greetings to all FirstBirders from the UK, where the #FirstBirdOfMyDay was a Blackcap in the bush by my window. I never knew there were Blackcaps here! I’m going to spend the day seeing if there are any Swifts in the neighbourhood 😺

My first birds were a variety of gulls and waders - Herring Gull, BH Gull, Curlew, Oystercatcher, Turnstone, and Redshank , all making the best of some cold and windy conditions on the Northumberland coast. First passerine was a Stonechat, one of a pair.

Slate grey still day, very quiet except for Boss pigeon strolling around the back grass.
Seen from my bed.
Happy New Year FirstBirders.

Oh my goodness, ‘my’ Dunnock is SINGING! Best #FirstBirdOfMyDay and #FirstBirdOf2026 ! He’s there, where he always is, surrounded by sunrise-pink frost. He hopped over to grab some cheese and then flew to an ivy perch and sang. Happy New Year #FirstBirders. #WhatsYours

I was very lucky this Christmas morning to see a Great Crested Grebe sailing past the window on a still-choppy Thames. Wishing all FirstBirders a lovely day today 😻 #FirstBirdOfMyDay

Fascinating article for all #FirstBirders 👍😺 Thinking of all ‘our’ Swifts currently in Africa - while I’d love to see them year round, I can’t imagine there being enough insect life to ever sustain them over winter, even if the climate did warm considerably.
The changing behaviour of birds – from swallows attempting to overwinter to nightingales staying less time in Africa – is evidence of rapid climate change.

A clear warning, reports Jenny Rhodes ⤵️
The truth about migratory birds and the climate emergency
Both the warming climate and wilder weather systems are disrupting birds’ natural migration patterns

I found this birding book along the side of the road on the Tamiami trail in the Everglades on 8/25/25. It is so well loved with sightings going back decades. If you're a birder (I am not) please spread the word and hep me find the owner so they can be reunited

Morning #FirstBirders 😺 Been with family for a week but am now back home and the ONLY bird I can hear, never mind see, is a Swift, calling softly from one of the next boxes. It’s so eerie. The sky is empty. (Mind you, so is the street - everyone’s on holiday, it would seem). #FirstBirdOfMyDay

Happy Summer Solstice all #firstbirders Eric and Erica came to see me, but not #firstbirdofmyday, which was a Blackbird swinging on the fatball feeder. A lovely walk followed, a Yellow Spell (x2) in the Field Maple 🍁 plus two, few days old foals in the field - magic.

Morning, #FirstBirders! Been at a conference & stuck inside, so very happy to finally be able to take note of all the birds flying free around my home 😺 Today’s #FirstBirdOfMyDay was the resident Feral Pigeons swirling around in another grey cloud above my head 😹
