College towns are company towns, y’all — and that isn’t just true of flagships and Ivys and such.
It's important to note here that we're not just talking about faculty & university staff. 100s of U.S. colleges are in towns or small cities where they form the major industry & lifeblood of the community. Loss of students -> loss of rent $, restaurant $, bars, bookstores, gaming stores...

It's interesting to me that Anthropic/OpenAI have been less consistent in their release cadence for small models compared to their flagships. Clearly they drive much less revenue, but they're also cheaper and faster to train, and can distill from the flagships.

Which is a ridiculous notion, by the way. Browse a list of fortune 500 CEOs and like half of them went to state flagships. The idea you need an ivy degree to be successful in elite society (or that an Ivy degree guarantees success) is just not true.
