Pearlfish (the one that lives in sea cucumber anuses)

Unlike other bioluminescent fish, the flashlightfish lives in shallow waters.

Three likely uses:
1. Hunting plankton at night.
2. Coordinating schooling.
3. Evading or confusing predators.

They're a good model to work with: shallow tropical waters are easy to replicate in a lab.

When facing a simulated predator or prey, the Anomalops intermittently retracts the skin fold or "blinks" their light at different rates.

Time to show my new character that'll be part of Astreas. The flashlight fish-sea slug Mesmer!

Let's talk about the fish with flashlight eyes.

Anomalops katoptron, the Splitfin flashlightfish, has pouches under each eye filled with bioluminescent bacteria. It has a built in reflector & shutter to direct the light or conceal it at will.

For years, we didn't know why.

Ribbon eel, oarfish, every rays, tripod fish, basking shark, flashlightfish, mackerel fish with the prettiest patterns 🙏
