Bowmaking: finally at the tillering stage. Just a simple maple flatbow with linen backing.

Thinking about buying this flatbow to travel, but concerned about shrinkage and expansion. [by Gorilla-Samurai]

Made a big purchase for my newest hobby today (a lovely flatbow for our reenactment projectiles demos, nice low draw weight, it Looks The Right Size in my hand) as well as some smaller ones (eating knife; horn spoon; natural dye colour sample sheet...) good day at da market!

In York today, making a #flatbow from a stick, in amongst some trees, hatchet, draw knife, little fire, all the mod cons.

Hey skyline, anyone have a good (preferably not video) explainer of how to string and fire a flatbow? By which I mean a rectangular cross-section self-bow. I want this for novel writing purposes.

Ricurvo.

New portfolio project posted: a primitive flatbow.

This is a rudimentary type of bow; slightly more sophisticated than a simple bent stick, but only just.

It was made under instruction on a four-day course in 2014.

Taught at school how to skin a rabbit. I'm a product of the UK independent school system, and they teach all manner of strange things. Archery, I was given a bow as a child, a flatbow, and I'm a medieval nut. I can make a flatbow. Foraging: grew up in rural area, and I'm curious about new food!

Archery on Sunday was interesting, as I came home with more bows than I went out with.
The club had one donated and they were selling it with new limbs.
I use a one-piece American flatbow, and this was a traditional wooden riser takedown.
I tried it, shot a respectable Portsmouth, and bought it.

I recently switched from an American Flatbow to a basic takedown barebow, shooting off the shelf.
That and slowing down my shooting a little have had a positive impact.

The Primitive Flatbow
For Christmas 2014, my present from my wife was to join a course run the following spring, in which I’d spend four days in the woods making a primitive flatbow. Run by Jamie of the Wild Bushc…

Hey @armadilldough.bsky.social do you have an offhand recommended link for a straightforward "draw and fire" explainer with a flatbow and one with a longbow? Where the feet go, where the hands are, the line of the body, the kinematics, etc? I assume there are no actual flatbow-longbow examples lol.

I've found that most archery in comics is quite inaccurate.

I think a better approach would be what kind of archery are you wanting to research, ie modern (recurve, compound) or trad (horsebow, flatbow, longbow) & then start by referencing that.

I even shot a 55 with it, which feels pretty good for something I'd never user before.
It's the same poundage as my flatbow, and the same aiming point.
And as it's wood, so I feel like I'm not straying too far from the simple end of bows.
I ought to find out what it is...

Oh, wow! Good job I'm too skint to book onto this at the moment as I don't *need* to make my own bow, but I sort of want to now...

Dammit, I've been thinking about this all day. Now I'm going to need to learn how to make an ACB. I already have a full-size flatbow I need to finish!

😃👍 I am an inveterate and veteran toxophilite 😂
Over 25(?) years I’ve shot the English Longbow a lot, dabbled in other styles like traditional recurve and flatbow, but shoot modern barebow these days. Indoors in winter, in the woods in summer rather than target nowadays
